Future Island-Island is an AHRC-funded research project led by Ulster University, with Queen’s University, The Glasgow School of Art, and University of the Arts London. One of four UK Green Transition Ecosystems, which forms part of the Design Museum’s Future Observatory programme, a national research initiative exploring how design can support the green transition.
The project unites communities, academics, and practitioners to co-create design-led research for greener, more sustainable island and coastal futures. We designed and developed the website to support this multi-partner, multi-year initiative, enabling teams to share outcomes and promote events.
Rathlin Island, Northern Ireland’s only inhabited offshore island, is central to the project as both a collaborator and a teacher. By working closely with the island community, the team explores new approaches to waste, heritage, tourism, and the reuse of heritage sites. The project connects partners across Northern Ireland, Ireland, Scotland, and the Nordic corridor to build shared knowledge on how remote and coastal communities can adapt to environmental, economic, and social change.
Given the breadth of the research, spanning multiple institutions, work packages, and a growing collection of journal updates, events, and public outputs, the website required a clear, flexible structure that could evolve with the project. We created a site that gives equal emphasis to the people, the place, and the research, with Rathlin’s landscape and story integrated throughout the design.
